American New Year’s • Celebrated on December 31st/ January 1st • The big moment is when the ball drops in Times Square. • Loud noises such as horns and fireworks often accompany the New Year. • Some common New Years foods are black-eyed peas and pork and sauerkraut. • You will often hear the Song Auld Lang Syne.

A Mexican New Year • Celebrated December 31st • They often have masquerade balls where they dress in costumes, unmasking at midnight. • They eat 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight, one every second.

New Years in Germany • It is called Neujahr. • Celebrated on December 31st • Dancing and music are important customs. • They will pore hot lead into cold water to tell the future from its shape. • Traditional German food includes fish. • The leave a little bit of every food eaten on New Years eve on the plate.

Egyptian New Years Traditions • Celebrated December 31st. • Wearing colorful new clothes is an important tradition. • Children often eat sweets, especially shaped like boys on a horse. • An important tradition is to visit all of your friends around town throughout the day, ending at the Mayor’s house.

An Australian New Years • Celebrated December 31st • Often a day for picnics and outdoor activities. • Church bells ring at midnight signally the new year. • Fireworks are very important as well as visiting friends and relatives.

New Years in Brazil • There parties begin early morning at the beached on December 31st. • They wear white clothing to give themselves good luck. • They jump in seven waves and throw flowers at the beaches. • They eat lentil soup and rice. • Candles are often lit.

Indian New Years Tradition • It is called Diwali, or the Festival of Lights. • It is celebrated in September of October, and it lasts 5 days. • People often clean their homes in hope for a clean new year. • Homes are than decorated with lights and prepared for large parties.

The Chinese New Year • It is called Yuan Tan. • It is celebrated between January 21st, and February 20th. • A great parade is held with large dragon costumes. • Lanterns are put up to rid their houses of evil spirits. • Navy blue is considered a color of joy and happiness. Red is also a very important color because it represents loyalty and truth. • It is sometimes called the Lantern Festival. • They will often say Gung Hay Far Choy!!! This means best wishes and have a prosperous New Year.
